About the Composer:
Fanny Hensel (1805-1847), born Fanny Mendelssohn, was a gifted German composer and pianist whose work was overshadowed during her lifetime by the fame of her brother, Felix Mendelssohn, and the restrictive gender norms of the 19th Century. She composer over 460 works, mainly for piano, or voice and piano. Perhaps her best known piece is the piano cycle Das Jahr (The year. 12 pieces, with each piece representing a month throughout the year). Some of her early pieces were even published under her brother's name. Later in life in 1846, she started to publish pieces under her own name, only to die the next year due to complications from a stroke.

Artistic Director's Notes:
This overture is the only piece that Fanny Hensel wrote solely for orchestra - at least as far as contemporary musicology can tell us.
